Today, Kaiser Permanente and the California Nurses Association (CNA) met for the 36th day of contract negotiations. In response to concerns about electronic bidding, Kaiser Permanente gave a presentation about the KP Careers website and the educational support we provide to nurses on how to use the system to apply and bid for jobs, and to receive notifications about positions of interest to them.

The following message from Chuck Columbus, Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources, was sent to all Kaiser Permanente employees today: As you may know, the leadership of the United Healthcare Workers West (SEIU-UHW) has been in a dispute with the Coalition of Kaiser Permanente Unions and its member unions over control of the Coalition. That is an internal Coalition issue that does not involve the management of Kaiser Permanente. However, for months now, SEIU-UHW’s leadership has insisted in private meetings that Kaiser Permanente management negotiate with SEIU-UHW as the sole representative of the Coalition in upcoming National Bargaining. In these meetings, SEIU-UHW’s leadership has threatened that if we refused their demands, they would put an initiative on the California ballot that would adversely affect Kaiser Permanente. 　

Today, Kaiser Permanente and the California Nurses Association (CNA) met for the 35th day of contract negotiations. There was positive discussion about Kaiser Permanente’s online job posting and bidding process.

Today, Kaiser Permanente and the California Nurses Association (CNA) met for the 34th day of contract negotiations. We’re pleased to announce that Kaiser Permanente and CNA reached another tentative agreement today, on nurse involvement in workplace safety committees. The new agreement provides a structure for nurses to join KP’s existing workplace safety committees, and a process for nurses to propose potential workplace safety projects.

Today, Kaiser Permanente and the California Nurses Association (CNA) met for the 33rd day of contract negotiations. We’re pleased to announce that Kaiser Permanente and CNA reached a verbal tentative agreement on in-service education, which we anticipate will be signed shortly. The agreement provides more comprehensive processes for registered nurses and nurse practitioners to give their input on priorities and topics of annual in-service education programs.

Today, Kaiser Permanente and the California Nurses Association (CNA) met for the 32nd day of contract negotiations. Kaiser Permanente presented an overview of the terms of a settlement regarding holiday pay for part-time benefitted KP nurses. The settlement is effective immediately. It simplifies holiday pay practices, clearly defines holiday pay scenarios, and ensures that part-time benefitted nurses will receive holiday pay without exhausting a “bank” of holiday hours. Today, Kaiser Permanente and the California Nurses Association (CNA) met for the 31st day of contract negotiations. Kaiser Permanente presented a counter to the union’s proposal on training and education that gives nurses a voice in prioritizing their educational needs by unit. We also spoke about our commitment for nurses to participate in and lead workplace safety activities. Next, KP presented its opening wage proposal to the union for current KP nurses, for the three-year term of the contract

Today, Kaiser Permanente and the California Nurses Association (CNA) met for the 30th day of contract negotiations. The parties discussed at length the topic of safety, training and education for nurses, and the union maintained its latest Skills Day proposal. Kaiser Permanente restated its commitment to ensuring the professional development and education of our nursing staff.

Today, Kaiser Permanente and the California Nurses Association (CNA) met for the 29th day of contract negotiations. Kaiser Permanente presented a counter proposal to the union’s Skills Day proposal. We also supplemented our Oct. 18 Safety Committee counter proposal with a Letter of Intent. The Letter of Intent affirms KP’s commitment to support nurses’ active participation in Integrated Workplace Safety Subcommittees (IWPSS). The parties engaged in robust discussion about these topics.

Kaiser Permanente and the California Nurses Association (CNA) agreed that each bargaining team would meet separately today to continue working on proposals. Negotiations are scheduled to resume on Thursday, Oct. 26. We will continue to keep you informed.
